In the original, the only way to save is by beating a castle, ghost house, or switch palace. Also, you can always go back and re-beat a ghost house whenever you want to save. A saved suspend point is indicated by a blue or a yellow circle in the Game List. Every Super Nintendo game owner will run into a dead battery at some point, especially since the dates on many game batteries expire around this year, or in the case of games like Mario World, have already expired.

I've replaced many batteries over the years. I'd say most of them lasted years, which is pretty amazing. Replacing the batteries isn't that difficult and there are lots of good tutorials on Youtube. The key, I found, was using a solder sucker to cleanly remove the original solder. This leaves two clean slots to either mount a battery holder when you need to change the battery in or a tabbed battery.

Modern consoles like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have background modes that, technically, keep them powered on for days and months on end but still, 20 freaking years for a bit console is a bit extreme. The closest thing to this I've done is keep my NBA Elite 11 demo preserved — across three different consoles — because it was removed from Xbox Live quickly after the game was canceled more than five years ago.
I was also given a friend's Xbox and it still had all of its gamesaves intact, some of which I preserved in tribute.
