First off, what does this mean? Second off who would be a better fit and make more more sense for the Skins? We can speculate why the Redskins would bring in these veteran backs until we're blue in the face.
Perhaps Tim Hightower is not one hundred percent? Perhaps Mike Shanahan does not feel that Evan Royster does not provide the proper depth needed behind Hightower and Helu? One thing is for sure, Hightower is not worried about his injury:. Like Grant, Cedric Benson will also turn 30 during this season. The biggest difference is he has two more years of NFL wear and tear on his body. The Texas product rekindled his career in Cincinnati where they have used him as a human battering ram over the past three years.
Benson has had more success lately averaging 1, yards over the past three years and over six touchdowns. Benson would certainly be an upgrade as a power runner who could be used well in goal line and third down situations. Just keep him away from boats. Benson is more of a ground and pound guy. By Redskin44 on By Jeff Bernard on By Parks Smith on By travisjh86 on Evan Royster is going to be the redskins most productive back next year. He does not have the speed of Helu or experience of Hightower but he is the most instinctive runner out of the group.
He has great vision and always falls forwards for yards, never a loss. He reminds me of emmit smith in the fact his measurablea are not great but he knows how to find holes and make plays. By rainmanc on By StephanHart on I see Hightower as a very well rounded veteran.
He blocks well, catches the ball well and runs hard. Stefalosha is in the game not only for defensive purposes but because he is solid all around, like hightower. Harden is young and can get crazy with his shot selection at times and decision making.
Helu is still a young player and may try and use his speed to bounce runs when he needs to stick it up the middle. I think Helu and Royster are better ball carriers than Hightower.
Harden is a better scorer than stefalisha. Stefalosha can make 3s, play D and keep a steady presence on the court. Hightower offers a similar presence but in a football situation.
Not on August He's fresh off three straight 1,yard seasons. There haven't been glaring warning signs in Benson's game that he's on the cusp of breaking down.
Grant had a strong December, but did next to nothing on the ground before that. During an eight-game stretch -- in the heart of Green Bay's schedule -- he averaged 2. Replay the defenses that Grant faced along his late-season surge.
Teams were begging the Packers to run the ball. With a rookie quarterback under center, he still managed 1, yards on carries 3. McCarthy prefers using multiple backs, anyways.
But Benson may give the backfield a dimension it currently lacks -- a big, durable, between-the-tackles back. Alex Green fits best in a spread attack, in space. James Starks could be a complete back, but hasn't been able to stay healthy. Brandon Saine is best suited for a utility role. The Packers could use a two-down, no-nonsense back ramming between the tackles. Was Ryan Grant that guy? Not really in When McCarthy talked about changing the way Green Bay runs the football way back in February, maybe this is one way.
In Cincinnati, Benson was not necessarily reliable in pass protection. Is that an issue in Green Bay? Not if Saine or Green emerge in camp. Benson had 12 fumbles the last two seasons.
His last two full seasons, Grant had three. If there's a definitive case for Grant, this is it. For a team that trumpets ball security so much, it is puzzling to sign someone with fumbling issues. Before we learned that Starks had a turf toe, this did feel like a panic move by Green Bay. One rocky exhibition game along a ho-hum camp for the backs alone doesn't warrant a knee-jerk signing like this.
A veteran can get in the way of this development. Promoting youth is how Ted Thompson has built a winner.
